In the blocks close to Hotel Continental several inns and pubs catered for passengers arriving or departing on the ships in the nearby docks. To this day the alley behind the hotel is named "Supgränd" - "Drinker´s alley" as a remainder of what was going on in this area during the early days of the 19th century. In 1902, after having been in operation for 73 years, the Hotel Continental was extensively refurbished. The stucco ceiling, the beautiful marble staircase, the solid oak flooring, the crystal chandeliers and the lead windows in the lobby are a result of this refurbishment. 

In the beginning of the 20th century Hotel Continental was a popular venue for grand parties and formal dinners. The hotel restaurant also became a much favoured meeting place for authors and artists. Many Swedish celebrities often stayed at Hotel Continental and dined in the restaurant.

Since 1996 the hotel is owned and operated as a family business. The hotel is continously refurbished each year. The guest rooms have all been redecorated and now have new wooden flooring, sound isolated windows, new textiles and furniture. The conference rooms have been redecorated and upgraded with new equipment such as PC-projector, wireless sound system, high speed internet both wireless and by cable, airconditioning, PC with Office software. Comfortable leather chairs and sound proof windows have been added in the conference rooms.

Wireless high speed internet is available in the hotel, in the guest rooms as well as in the conference rooms, in the restaurant and in all other public areas in the hotel. For hotel guests there is free access to the hotel "E-room" featuring a complete work station with a PC, high speed internet, a printer and a direct dial telephone connection. 

Today Hotel Continental in Ystad caters for both business and leisure travellers. The hotel has gained a reputation for beeing a professional conference venue offering a high service level, excellent value conference package rates and traditional style superb meals using high quality regional raw materials.

Hotel Continental in Ystad is Swedens oldest hotel – opened in 1829.

The hotel was initially named ”Hôtel Continental du Sud”. In 1824 a customs house in Hamngatan ( Harbour Street ) dating back to 1750 was demolished and soon afterwards work started on the site to build a new hotel. In the early years of the 19th century Ystad was Sweden´s main gateway to Europe. From Ystad postal steamers and freight vessels operated on regular routes to Poland, Germany and the Baltic states.  The demand for hotel accommodation in Ystad was heavy and several new hotels were opened.
